UK leaders in compliance and recycling solutions

Offsetting your CIO

The consumer information obligations (CIO) came into force at the beginning of 2000 and are designed to encourage packaging re-use or greater consumer involvement in the collection and recycling of packaging waste.

Obligated producers who have a main activity of ‘selling’ must provide consumers to whom they sell, whether they are householders or other businesses, the following information:

  • The return, collection and recovery systems available to consumers
  • The consumers’ role in contributing to re-use, recovery and recycling of packaging and packaging waste
  • The meaning of markings on packaging on the market
  • Sellers could also contribute to action being taken by local authorities; for example, by providing maps to show collection and/or recycling locations

A simple solution

Members of Comply Direct who have a main ‘selling’ activity, can offset their consumer information obligation through our COI hub for a small additional fee. The CIO hub details packaging material meanings, information on why and how to recycle, links to useful sites and links to a recycling bank locator.
