Data gathering techniques
Since 1st January 2000 data supplied has been required to be ‘as accurate as reasonably possible’. The relevant environment agency looks for data to be obtained by sampling and recording, as opposed to estimates and assumptions being made. The agencies believe that it is reasonably possible in the longer term for all packaging weights to eventually be recorded against all units supplied.
In the case of obligated producers importing packaging for which they are the final user, purchase data will be required for data gathering and auditing purposes. If every item cannot be accounted for, then an extrapolation from other data may be acceptable.
Groups must account for all obligated subsidiary companies that are registered with the group and also be able to provide to the agencies disaggregated data for each subsidiary upon request.
All data provided by suppliers should be verified and be supported by a description of how it was obtained.
