On first appearance the packaging data form can appear quite daunting for obligated producer companies who are required to complete the form when submitting their packaging data to either a compliance scheme or to the relevant agency directly.

It is a requirement for all businesses registering to be able to complete the form and understand how the figures in the form relate to the packaging they handle, as the agencies will expect the data to be auditable.

Comply Direct’s data form

We have made this process as simple as possible. The data form has been designed so it is clear and concise, whilst still capturing all the required data. We have also produced a guidance document to accompany the form. Members of Comply Direct will soon be able to benefit from the online data submission area we are currently developing.

The data form has a section featuring tables dedicated to packaging data. Each table relates to a specific activity and data should be entered in metric tonnes only. The data form captures the packaging data in the following main tables, each relating to a specific activity.

Table 1 relates to all packaging activities carried out in the UK.

Table 2a relates to all export activity carried out on UK-supplied packaging by the obligated company.

Table 2b relates to all export activity carried out on UK-supplied packaging by a third party on products supplied by the obligated company.

Table 3a relates to imported packaging to which a further packaging activity is performed in the UK; for example, ‘Packing/filling’ or ‘Selling’ (not including exports).

Table 3b relates to imported packaging for which the obligated company is the end user or consumer.

Table 3c relates to imported packaging, which is subsequently exported whether or not further activities were performed.

Table 4 is a statement of obligation which will be calculated for members by Comply Direct on receipt of the data form.

In addition, the form has a number of further sections, including ‘Packaging activities’ which relates to the main activity carried out by the obligated company. That is the activity which handles most packaging. For example, if the majority of your packaging is reported in Tables 3a and Table 3b then your main packaging activity would be as an importer.
