Recycling in Action and Comply Direct are delighted to have recently partnered with the Uniserve Group of companies and welcomes this additional expertise, investment and resource.

Uniserve is a global company with an annual combined turnover of some £500m, who provides an excellent strategic fit to Recycling in Action and Comply Direct given its customer base is largely made up of large blue chip UK companies such as the major retailers.

The Uniserve Group Head Office is based at the London Mega Terminal in Tilbury, Essex and this state of the art location provides an excellent platform for onward distribution outside the UK.

Being part of the Uniserve Group enables us to pay best market prices for baled recyclable materials to our suppliers by utilising Uniserve’s global freight expertise to return such materials direct for recycling in the far East, in addition to our existing outlets in the UK and Europe.

Through dealing directly with paper mills and plastic processing companies in countries such as China, Taiwan and India we avoid any middlemen and we are able to increase logistics efficiencies that not only enable to pay a higher revenue for materials but enable us to demonstrate carbon dioxide reductions to suppliers for the movement of their waste materials. All waste material movements are accompanying by the necessary Duty of Care paperwork and full audit trail to end processor.

Through this Uniserve link we are most effective when working with large importing companies who have central Distribution Centres and who already backhaul their packaging waste from their stores to the DC. We would look to load up baled packaging waste directly in the containers arriving at DCs with imported products from the far East.

All obligated producers under the WEEE regulations should have registered with a compliance scheme by the 15 march 2007 deadline.

The targeting begins

The EA has confirmed that to date it has received 2,500 registrations of obligated producer companies across all the approved producer compliance schemes. This is less than the target they had of a minimum of 4,000 producers having registered by the 15 March 2007 deadline. The EA will therefore be undertaking some specific targeting of SIC codes and certain market sectors to try and increase the numbers of companies registering as producers under the WEEE regulations to the target level of at least 4,000 by the commencement of financial responsibilities from 1 July 2007. Comply Direct is continuing to recruit obligated companies and is pleased to confirm that it has achieved its target of a minimum 5% market share of the WEEE compliance market in terms of number of member companies.

Still unsure if you’re obligated?

It’s essential you understand whether your company is obligated as a producer of WEEE. The regulations are now in place and every obligated company must be a member of a compliance scheme or face the legal consequences of not complying. If you want help in determining your WEEE obligation then click here or you can contact our team by calling 0844 873 1034.

The EU Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive will soon come into force in the UK. Any producer, importer or distributor of electrical and electronic equipment in the UK has obligations. If you are obligated, you will have to finance the treatment, recovery and disposal of hazardous WEEE from 1st April 2007 and all other WEEE from 1st July 2007.

UK wide WEEE seminars

We are holding a series of free seminars in early 2007 to help companies understand their legal obligations under WEEE. Places are strictly first come first served. Find out more about our seminars and register your interest now.

Want to know if you’re obligated?

Use our quick and simple online tool to find out now.

If obligated, you will need to register with an approved compliance scheme to meet your obligations and supply data on how much EEE you place on the market each calendar year. You also need to say whether you supplied the equipment for household or business use. You will get a WEEE producer registration number that you will need to give to anyone who distributes or sells your equipment. You will also need to mark your products with a crossed out wheelie bin from 1st April 2007. If you fail to comply you will be breaking the law and may be liable to a fine.

Why use Comply Direct to offset your obligation?

We’ve taken a fresh approach to the issue of WEEE compliance. In response to market demand, we’ve established Comply Direct as a simple and low cost online solution.

Being part of Recycling in Action means our compliance service is supported by in-house UK-based recycling facilities and logistics. The integrated nature of these facilities means we can offer a ‘one-stop-shop’ solution with many cost-benefits. It also means members benefit from the ongoing investment in latest waste recycling technology and techniques.

All these aspects make Comply Direct the clear choice for companies looking for a smarter way to fulfil their WEEE obligations.

Are you happy with your existing packaging compliance scheme?

Are you paying too much for packaging compliance? Are you paying for extra services such as consultancy which you don’t use? Now’s the time to consider your options.

An alternative approach with Comply Direct

We are a new scheme with a new approach. We provide simple and hassle-free compliance at the lowest possible cost. By offering online support and data submission, and by having access to our own PRN supply, we ensure our membership costs are the most competitive in the industry. Added to this, our members only pay for the services they require.

Act now – don’t get locked in

Terms and conditions for resignation from packaging compliance schemes are typically 60 days. This means you need to resign from your current scheme before the end of October 2006. Resignation is a simple letter to your scheme. If you don’t resign in line with the number of days required then in reality you are locked in to your current scheme. So even if you’re still only considering your options, make sure you check the resignation terms of your existing compliance scheme.

Compare the difference

We can provide you with a direct cost comparison of the costs you have incurred for 2006 with your existing scheme and what you would have paid if you’d been a member of Comply Direct. Contact us now to discover the difference.

The stand was buzzing with activity all day and we’ve all met lots of new companies and people who are interested in our new approach to waste recycling and compliance. Ater a long day we headed for some refreshment of our own to recharge in anticipation of another busy day.

Day 2: Wednesday 13 September

Colleagues from our plastics recycling plant in Wales joined us today – providing much needed extra pairs of hands as it was another frantic day on stand 572.

We’ve had some great conversations with businesses looking to divert their recyclables from landfill and many have been particularly pleased with the fact that we’re offering a UK-based solution. We’ve also been able to offer integrated packaging compliance, which has attracted interest from companies who currently register directly with the EA.

It has to be said though that one of the highlights of the stand is the trophy taking pride of place on the bar. This trophy has been the envy of other stands, representing the fact that we have just won the Waste World Cup, beating 27 other teams (many of them fellow exhibitors!).

Day 3: Thursday 14 September

Another busy day – the show was wrapped up in fine style with more visitors to the stand and a few beers opened. It’s been a great few days at RWM. An excellence opportunity to show the industry and the market what we’re achieving.

Recycling in Action has beaten 27 other six-a-side football teams from across the waste and recycling sector to be crowned the Waste World Cup 2006 winner. This was the first year Recycling in Action has competed in this tournament, organised by Letsrecycle.com.

The Recycling in Action team lifted the trophy after conceding only 1 goal through four group games, the second round, and the quarter and semi finals before holding their nerve to win a tense penalty shoot-out 5-4 in the final.

As definite underdogs of the competition (no official pre-tournament publicity for us and not a mention in the lead up punditry!) Recycling in Action was placed in what was billed as “the group of death”.

Emerging successfully as group winners and still very much alive, Recycling in Action then swept past several other teams, to reach a semi-final match-up against a confidently poised Valpak. The 14 minute match saw Recycling in Action ‘reprocess’ the opposition and achieve full ‘compliance’ with the team’s philosophy of ‘total football’ with a 3-0 victory.

The final match against ACM Waste Management saw David the Woodmeister holding his nerve (and his sunburn) to calmly slot home the decisive spot kick after a tough goalless contest, which had everyone running for the bar in celebration.

Recycling in Action would like to thank letsrecycle.com and all the other teams that participated for a great day. We look forward to defending the trophy in 2007.

What a difference a year makes…

Recycling in Action’s highlights of the year include:

New headquarters and team expansion
Due to business expansion and the active development of Recycling in Action, we have moved to a new office set amidst 3,000 acres of beautiful Yorkshire parkland.

A new team has also been established, with the recent addition of five new members of staff, which will provide full guidance and direction to new and existing customers, who will also benefit from having one dedicated contact able to coordinate a bespoke recycling solution.

New WEEE and packaging compliance service
In response to market demand, we’ve taken a fresh approach to packaging and WEEE compliance by offering a low cost, online and hassle free solution. We have been approved by the Environment Agency to provide packaging compliance and are gearing up to do the same for WEEE.

This online approach ensures the service is accessible and easy to use. Members can access all resources and submit the required documentation online. This avoids excessive administration, saves time and has clear cost-benefits that are then passed on. To ensure it really is hassle-free, the online service is also underpinned by an experienced team, offering dedicated support and expertise.

Services are clearly targeted and transparently priced. This means members only pay for the services they require and their individual needs are met at the lowest possible cost. The compliance service is supported by in-house UK-based recycling facilities and logistics. Find out more

New plastic waste washing and pelletising recycling plant
Multi-million pound investment has gone in to a new plant that can handle heavily contaminated plastics. This complete plastic waste washing and pelletising recycling plant is based at the Capital Valley site in South Wales.

Complementing existing recycling machinery on site, the new plant accepts plastics in a heavily contaminated state and reprocesses it into a pellet. The resulting recycled material is then fed back into the UK supply chain for remanufacture. Since it’s launch at the start of the year, the plant has recycled over 8,000 tonnes of plastic. Find out more

New PRN/PERNcapabilities
The plastics recycling plant has recently been approved by the Environment Agency as an accredited reprocessor of packaging waste. The new BAT washing and extrusions lines are believed to be the only plant capable of handling the more heavily contaminated end of plastic packaging waste i.e. food contaminated films collected by local authorities or fertilizer bags from farmers. We have also been approved as an accredited exporter of packaging materials such as aluminium, steel and plastics for recycling outside the UK.

New WEEE capacity
Building on existing fridge recycling facilities, we are now expanding to handle all ten categories of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). This service includes the collection, treatment and recycling of all electrical and electronic equipment. Find out more

New farm waste solution
The new plant is the foundation of a simple and environmentally acceptable solution we’ve established for farmers dealing with contaminated farm plastics nationwide. The FarmPlas Network, brings together regional collection schemes. The collection schemes are independent, regional businesses, many of them set-up by farmers themselves.

All the plastic collected is taken to the recycling plant. Here it is washed of all contamination and recycled into plastic pellets. This recycling technology closes the loop and provides a solution that is truly sustainable. Find out more

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has proposed that the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment regulations will be implemented from January 1 2007, with full implementation scheduled for July 1 2007. From April 2007 local authorities will no longer have to carry the costs of treating WEEE.

The DTI will now begin drafting regulations and guidance, which will be consulted on in the third period of 2006. The announcement came with the warning that government and stakeholders will need to accelerate practical preparations for implementation in parallel with the consultation if the UK is to deliver the latest timetable.
