UK leaders in compliance and recycling solutions

Delayed… but not gone away

Energy minister Malcolm Wicks recently confirmed that the implementation of the WEEE directive is to once again be delayed. There is little indication as to the length of this latest delay other than it is now unlikely that the directive will be transposed into UK regulations before the summer 2006. This will result in producer responsibility commencing from Q1 2007 at the earliest.

Announcing the delay, Mr Wicks said: “The directive is challenging and effective implementation of its obligations requires a lot of planning and preparation – it is vital that the producers, retailers and the waste industry together with Government have the appropriate plans, infrastructure and regulations in place.”

One thing that’s certain with regards to the WEEE directive in the UK is that it will be here eventually. Comply Direct will continue to engage with the DTI regarding the latest thinking on implementation to ensure that the final regulations are flexible and fair to ensure costs can be minimised whilst not placing too much of an administrative burden on UK producer obligated companies.
