What are the likely costs?

The EEE sector of the economy is extremely competitive and margins have been eroded for manufacturers year after year. Therefore the cost burden of the WEEE directive is of great concern for all involved. Companies operating with marginal profit levels will almost certainly have to pass such costs onto the consumer.

Initial estimated costs to the UK economy from the WEEE Regulations were expected to be between £217-£455 million per annum to comply and across Europe the estimates from the European commission were that there will be an average cost increase of between 1 and 2% for most EEE products.

The true situation in the UK is much better than the above estimates and there is sufficient treatment capacity in the UK to handle all categories of WEEE at end of life whether it originate from the B2B or B2C sectors.

There are still many uncertainties (variables) regarding what the true final cost will be for both B2B and B2C obligated producers such as the level of waste arisings, the number of producers registering, market value of recyclate material stream, ongoing treatment costs, logistics costs, number and location of collection sites etc.

If you want a cost estimate for either a B2B or B2C obligation for compliance period one we will require the amount in tonnes of EEE you have placed on the UK market in 2006. Our aim is to be the lowest cost WEEE compliance scheme in the UK and this can only be achieved through our continual focus on overhead costs and maximizing efficiencies in the collection and treatment networks we utilise.

Our membership fees at Comply Direct are now available and range from £300 per compliance period to £1,100 depending on obligation size and company turnover. Also the relevant environment agency fees are now available with the main default fee being £445.

Keep your costs for compliance down

Companies that join Comply Direct as will benefit from our low cost approach to compliance and we are able to help potentially obligated producers reduce their costs by providing an initial consultancy service to help them understand their obligation and to enable them to make the correct decision regarding which compliance scheme is best fitted to their needs.
